U.S. House of Representatives (D-52nd/CA)
Scott H. Peters represents California's 52nd congressional district. The district includes coastal and central portions of the city of San Diego. Peters previously served two terms on the San Diego City Council from 2000 to 2008. He serves on the House Armed Services and Science, Space, & Technology Committees.
A proponent of immigration reform and civil liberties, Peters is a cosponsor of the Border Security, Economic opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013. He also voted in support of the USA Freedom Act of 2013, which brings several reforms to key government surveillance programs.
Peters is an original co-sponsor of H.Res130, acknowledging the Cyrus Cylinder as a symbol of respect for human rights and religious tolerance and commemorating the cylinder’s tour in the United States.
Peters signed and supported a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry calling on the administration to prioritize the release of Amir Hekmati, an Iranian American and Marine veteran who has been detained in Iran since August 2011.
Peters is a co-host of PAAIA’s annual Nowruz reception on Capitol Hill. He also served as an honorary co-host of the opening reception to celebrate A Thousand Years of the Persian Book exhibition at Library of Congress in March of 2013.
