Judge Sabrina Setareh Kraus is a first generation American, of Persian-Jewish descent. Her parents, Abby Setareh and Jacqueline Senehi met and married in Tehran in 1964, and then moved to the United States, settling in New York. Kraus was born in 1966; she is married and is the mother of three children.
Judge Kraus received her undergraduate degree from Colgate University in 1988, with a major in International Relations and French Literature. She earned her law degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, in 1991.
Judge Kraus began her career as a litigator, specializing in Real Estate Litigation. She was a partner at two prestigious law firms in Manhattan, and, after nearly fifteen years in private practice, was appointed in 2006 to the Housing Court.
An active member of the legal community, Judge Kraus was elected by her colleagues as President of the Housing Court Judges Association in 2010. She is also a member of various professional organizations including the New York City Bar Association, Jewish Lawyer’s Guild, National Association of Women Judges, New York Women’s Bar Association, and New York County Lawyer’s Association.
Judge Kraus was reported out of two Democratic screening panels as “Most Highly Qualified” for election to Civil Court in Manhattan. Judge Kraus ran for Civil Court Judge in the Democratic Primary for Manhattan’s 3rd Judicial District, which was held on Tuesday, September 13th, 2011.
